“People are pretty much adding any type of adjective in front of the word  ‘marketing’. I could create ‘asshole marketing’ and probably make it a thing.”

Jumping on the Bandwagon

Kids say the darndest things (even big ones).

The other day, my son (age 21) and I were talking about the different ‘types of marketing’ (like influencer marketing, email marketing, ambush marketing, etc). Then he comes out with a one-liner that totally cracked me up:

“People are pretty much adding any type of adjective in front of the word ‘marketing’. I could create ‘asshole marketing’ and probably make it a thing.”

Out of the mouths of babes.

Over the last two years I’ve been jumping on the content marketing bandwagon.

What is Content Marketing?

According to the Content Marketing Institute, “Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

This blog is an example of that. So are my monthly emails, vlogs, webinars and my ebook.

The idea behind content marketing is that instead of pitching your products or services, you provide relevant and useful content to your client prospects and customers to help them solve problems.

It’s give and take.

You share a bit of your knowledge and expertise for free to establish credibility and genuinely help people. You build a relationship based on your expertise and giving spirit. Then you hope that you are top of mind when these same people need more of the same (and are ready to pay for it).

Every small business needs a content marketing strategy!

Here are 5 Benefits of Content Marketing:

#1 – Brand Awareness

#2 – Competitive Advantage

#3 – Lead Generation

#4 – Website Traffic

#5 – Client Engagement
